Google is the top company in the world right now. While the search engine has enjoyed success for many reasons, Google’s continued commitment to improving employee engagement and keeping employees happy may very well contribute to the company’s huge success. Let’s look to Google for ways to keep employees happy.

Google’s unique culture has gotten a lot of publicity and media attention for a reason. After all, they even made a Vince Vaughn movie about it. Google has its own way of doing interviews and screening new candidates, but the employee perks Google employees receives are probably the biggest way the search engine keeps its employees happy. Being the top company in the world, Google obviously has the expendable funds to offer its people the best employee perks, offering everything from free organic meals, full insurance coverage, on-site massages, and even free haircuts. Your company or small business might not be able to afford to install a swimming pool, but giving your employees even a few cheap perks can do wonders for employee engagement and morale. Mark Rousseau, the human resources director of Satellite TV Depot, experienced an overall increase in employee satisfaction after he started supplying free coffee and soft drinks for his employees in the company break room. “A free Pepsi might not necessarily have a huge impact on profits and productivity, but it does let your employees know that we value them and are trying to improve their daily experience at the office,” Rousseau advised.

Making Sure Employees Know Their Opinions Have Value

Employee perks are the best, but all the free perks in the world won’t keep your employees happy if they feel like their opinion doesn’t matter. If you worry your company’s employees don’t feel valued, take a page from Google’s book. Even though Google is the top company in the world, Google trusts its workers with access to company information. “If you value people, and you care about them as whole people, one thing you do is give them [a] voice, and you really listen,” said Google’s VP of People Development Karen May. To make sure employees feel that their voice is heard, Google hosts open forums every week, allowing its people to ask questions and voice opinions.

Making New Staff Members Feel Welcome

Growth is a good thing for every company or organization, but too much expansion might cause new employees to feel disconnected or lost. Making new employees feel part of the team is very important at Google, as the company employed 30,000+ employees last year. Being friendly may seem trivial in the business world, bur making your employees feel welcome and included can actually help you get more out of them in the long run, so listen up. Statistics found by Google HR head Laszlo Bock show that receiving a genuine friendly greeting from a manager can lead to a considerable increase in engagement and employee productivity–up to 15% over the first year of that individual’s employment. It may seem like common sense, but be nice to your employees. It will keep them motivated and ready to work!

A Happy Worker is a Productive Worker

At the end of the day, a happy staff is a productive staff. Google is making waves with their unique style and approach to employee productivity, motivation and job engagement. You might have thought that your company doesn’t have the financial means to copy their methods, but as you can see many of Google’s ideas translate well to a smaller scale.
